Joint principal component: wavelet analysis of atmospheric teleconnection: the North Atlantic Oscillation case

چکیده
The impact of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on synoptic conditions in Ukraine can not be considered as fully defined as the territory of Ukraine is located at the transitional boundary of processes associated with the NAO. As a rule, common methods based on the principal component analysis (PCA) can not reveal the impact of the NAO. Moreover, the analysis of synopticscale processes based on the data with the one-day (or lesser) discreteness is affected by noise. In this paper, the wavelet analysis is used jointly with the PCA to determine time intervals when a linkage between the NAO and processes over Ukraine was significant. Such an approach allowed revealing the time intervals during the cold seasons, when simultaneous variations of synoptic conditions in North Atlantic and Eastern Europe occurred at quasisynoptic time scales. Usually, that process is observed not very often, but simultaneous variations can be in progress during a few weeks. The coherent changes of synoptic conditions do not depend on the strength and phase of the NAO and can be both in-phase and anti-phase. The significant wavelet coherence is probably registered when two intensive synoptic processes different from general synoptic situation are observed.

The influence of Atlantic-Eurasian teleconnection patterns on temperature regimes in South Caspian Sea coastal areas: a study of Golestan Province, North Iran
The main objective of this study was to reveal the impact of nine climate indices on temperature changes and climate oscillations in Golestan Province along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Climate indices data from across the Atlantic-Eurasian sector were collected from the NCEP/NCAR, the Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) and the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) over a period of 40 years (1971...

متن کاملAtmospheric teleconnection patterns and eddy kinetic energy content: wavelet analysis
In this paper, we employ a non-decimated wavelet decomposition to analyse long-term variations of the teleconnection pattern monthly indices (the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Southern Oscillation) and the relationship of these variations with eddy kinetic energy contents (KE) in the atmosphere of mid-latitudes and tropics. Major advantage of using this tool is to isolate shortand long-ter...
متن کاملThe Effects of North Atlantic Oscillation on the atmospheric middle level Anomaly and precipitation of Iran.Case study: west of Iran.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the North Atlantic Oscillation on the middle levels of Atmosphere and precipitation changes in the West of country. To do this, first monthly rainfall data of 17 synoptic stations of the West Country in period of 30 years from 1984 to 2014 of country were collected from Meteorological Organization. As well as North Atlantic Oscillation...
متن کاملA review of the temporal and spatial variability of Arctic and Antarctic atmospheric circulation based upon ERA-40
A survey of the spatial and temporal behavior of the atmospheric general circulation as it relates to both polar regions is presented. The review is based on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) 40-year reanalysis (ERA-40), updated using ECMWF operational analyses. The analysis spans 1960–2005 in the Northern Hemisphere, but is restricted to 1979–2005 in the Southern H...
